Rare Moldavite Tektite Hand Carved Skull Specimen

This listing features an extremely rare Moldavite tektite hand carved skull weighing 6.5 grams, crafted from genuine natural Moldavite. The photograph shown in the listing displays the exact specimen you will receive, allowing you to closely examine the carving detail, colour, and natural characteristics of the material before purchase.

Moldavite is one of the most sought-after natural impact glasses in the world, valued by collectors for its unique extraterrestrial origin and distinctive green colour. This piece has been carefully shaped into a detailed skull carving while preserving the natural appearance and translucency of the original Moldavite material.

The specimen includes a fully hand-signed Premium Certificate of Authenticity, confirming the authenticity of the Moldavite. Full sizing and visual detail can be seen clearly in the listing photographs.

Geological Identity and Impact Origin

Moldavite is a type of tektite, a natural glass formed during a meteorite impact event. Tektites are created when the intense heat and pressure of an impact melt terrestrial rocks and eject molten material into the atmosphere. As this material cools rapidly during flight and upon landing, it solidifies into natural glass.

Moldavite formed approximately 14.8 million years ago during the meteorite impact that created the Nördlinger Ries crater in southern Germany. The impact expelled molten silica-rich material across parts of Central Europe, with most Moldavite deposits found in the Czech Republic, particularly within the regions of South Bohemia and Moravia.

Unlike crystalline minerals, Moldavite is classified as a natural silica-rich glass, typically composed primarily of silicon dioxide (SiO₂) along with small amounts of aluminium, potassium, and other trace elements derived from the original terrestrial material.

Colour and Physical Characteristics

Moldavite is known for its distinctive olive green to deep forest green colour, which can vary depending on thickness and internal composition. Many specimens display excellent translucency, allowing light to pass through the glass and reveal internal flow structures formed during rapid cooling.

Natural Moldavite often exhibits surface textures such as sculpted ridges, pits, and etched patterns, created by atmospheric interaction while the molten material travelled through the air before cooling.

In carved pieces, the glass is carefully shaped and polished to highlight the natural colour and translucency of the material while maintaining the unique appearance of the original tektite.

Natural Glass Structure and Internal Features

Because Moldavite is a natural glass rather than a crystalline mineral, it lacks an ordered crystal lattice. Instead, its internal structure is amorphous, meaning the atoms are arranged irregularly rather than forming repeating crystal patterns.

Under magnification, Moldavite may show internal flow lines and tiny gas bubbles, features created during the rapid solidification of molten material following the impact event.

These natural characteristics are typical of tektites and are considered important indicators of genuine Moldavite.

Hand Carved Skull Craftsmanship

This specimen has been expertly hand carved into a skull form, a style often used in mineral art and collector pieces. The carving requires careful lapidary work because Moldavite’s glass structure demands precision cutting to avoid fractures.

The finished piece highlights the natural colour and translucency of the Moldavite while creating a distinctive sculptural form. Each carved skull is unique due to natural variations in colour, transparency, and internal features within the material.

The combination of natural impact glass and detailed carving makes this piece both a geological specimen and a collectible artwork.

Collector Significance and Geological Interest

Moldavite is one of the most famous impact-related materials in the world and is highly prized by collectors interested in meteorite events, tektites, and natural glasses formed by cosmic impacts.

Because Moldavite is found only within a relatively small geographic region in Central Europe, genuine specimens are limited in supply. Carved examples are especially desirable as they combine natural rarity with skilled craftsmanship.

Collectors often display Moldavite specimens in mineral cabinets, meteorite collections, geology displays, or natural history collections where the material’s unique origin can be appreciated.

In certain traditions, natural glasses and crystals are traditionally associated with symbolic and spiritual practices, where they are valued for their appearance and rare origin.

Authenticity and What You Will Receive

You will receive the exact Moldavite carved skull shown in the listing photographs, weighing approximately 6.5 grams. Each specimen is individually photographed to ensure that the item displayed is the one shipped.

The piece includes a fully hand-signed Premium Certificate of Authenticity, confirming the material as genuine Moldavite.

Please refer to the photographs for the full size reference and to view the natural colour and carving detail that make this Moldavite specimen unique. Each piece represents natural impact glass formed during a prehistoric meteorite event and later shaped into a distinctive collector carving.

Hi, I received my Norfolk stone age flint tool yesterday and I’m really pleased with it. It arrived in perfect condition just how you see it in the sellers advert. What an amazing item to own an actual tool that someone shaped themselves to do a specific job, this cunjers up so many questions in my head and I’m hoping that it will do the same for my grandkids! It was an excellent price + it arrived nice and quick was well packaged and with lots of info on it, I would recommend this seller 😊👍.

Unfortunately the first item arrived smashed in the post. I reached out to the seller who was apologetic and quickly offered either a replacement or refund. I opted for a replacement as it was an item to show my son. The seller got this packaged up (with more packaging the last time) with a little added extra and posted out the same day. It arrived the next day! Which means they must have sent it first class. I am super impressed with how efficiently and positively they dealt with the situation!
